Tattoo Pricing

Tattoo Pricing at Aloha Tattoos – Murray, Utah
A Quick Pricing Summary
There’s a lot that goes into pricing a tattoo, but many people try to compare shop to shop. Don’t fall into that trap. Pricing depends on so many factors that “hourly rates” alone don’t tell the full story.
Here’s a quick breakdown of how we price tattoos at Aloha Tattoos. This will give you a basic idea of our structure—but keep reading below to learn how we determine the cost of your tattoo.
$100 Minimum
$120 specialty minimum
Some areas have a higher minimum due to the skin and placement challenges. We’ll discuss these with you before we begin. No surprises.
$160 Per Hour – Shop Rate
Our hourly rates range from $140 to $250, depending on the artist, their style, and their experience. (More experience usually means a faster, more efficient, and less painful tattoo.)
The shop average is $160/hr.
Quotes are rough estimates only—final pricing depends on the actual tattoo. Always discuss your budget with your artist before your session.
Larger, multi-session pieces are often priced per session or per piece.
By the Piece – Variable
Set price agreed upon before the tattoo begins.
Based on the artwork, placement, and your budget.
Any changes or additions will be priced separately.
Half-Day / Full-Day Sessions

Price depends on the artist, project, and budget.

The Cost of Your Tattoo
The most common question we hear is: “How much will this tattoo cost?” The honest answer: it depends.
So many people call asking for our hourly rate—but hourly rates between shops or artists aren’t comparable. An hour of one artist’s time is not the same as an hour of another’s.
Pricing depends on things like:
Exact design and details
Placement on the body
Size and complexity
Black and grey vs. color
Your skin type and how it takes pigment
The artist’s expertise and efficiency
That’s why it’s impossible to give you a solid price without a consultation.
Quotes can not be given over the phone, via text, or online. While we may provide a rough estimate based on the limited information we have, it is NOT a QUOTE. Quotes can only be given by the artist in person at a Consultation. If you have a budget, just tell the artist what you have to work with. They are not trying to get every penny from you, they are trying to give you something magnificent at a fair price. - Years go into the study and practice of tattooing, and supplies are more expensive than gas prices!
Hourly vs. Set Pricing vs. Session Pricing
At Aloha Tattoos, we use two main pricing models:
Set Price – Smaller tattoos (and some larger ones) are quoted at a set cost, agreed upon before we start. This way, you know exactly what to expect.
Hourly Rate – Complex tattoos that take more than 1–2 hours are billed hourly. Depending on the artist and project, rates range from $140–$250/hr.
For large, multi-session projects, we often charge by the session to make things simpler.
Why Hourly Rates Aren’t Equal from shop to shop and Artist to Artist
Many clients think cheaper hourly rates mean less expensive tattoos—but the opposite is often true.
An efficient, experienced artist might complete a piece in 1 hour that could take a less skilled artist 3 hours—and the quality still won’t compare. That “cheaper” hourly rate ends up costing you more money, more time in pain, and more touch-ups down the road.
At Aloha Tattoos, we pride ourselves on efficient, high-quality work that minimizes pain and maximizes results. Faster, better tattoos—done right the first time.
Shop Minimums
$100 minimum for most tattoos.
$120–$150 minimum for certain areas that are harder to tattoo due to skin conditions.
We’re always upfront about pricing and potential healing concerns, so you’ll never be caught off guard.
Our minimum reflects our commitment to:
100% disposable supplies
Premium pigments
The highest sanitary standards
Some shops may offer cheaper minimums, but they don’t hold themselves to the same standards we do.
Quality Over Cheap
If you’re only looking for cheap, quick tattoos, we may not be the shop for you—and that’s okay.
But if you want:
Artwork that lasts a lifetime
Tattoos you’ll be proud to show off forever
A safe, clean environment
Results done in less time, with less pain
…then Aloha Tattoos is the shop for you.
We don’t price match—because other shops don’t offer what we do. When you choose Aloha, you’re choosing efficiency, safety, and craftsmanship.
Touch-ups
At Aloha Tattoos, we view touch-ups as additional tattoo work performed after a tattoo has healed in order to Complete the tattoo. -or- Fixing poor healing situations due to client neglect.
Fortunately, true touch-ups are relatively uncommon at Aloha Tattoos. When clients follow our aftercare instructions and the tattoo heals normally, most tattoos settle beautifully with little to no additional work required.
While our artists take great pride in their work and want every tattoo to look its absolute best, any additional tattooing requires time, skill, sterile equipment, and single-use supplies. For that reason, we do not offer “free touch-ups.” in most cases.
If you feel your tattoo may need additional work after healing, we recommend waiting at least 4–6 weeks before contacting us so the tattoo has adequate time to fully settle into the skin.
In many cases, what clients perceive as a touch-up is simply a small amount of additional work needed to perfect a piece after healing. Our artists are often willing to revisit their work and add finishing touches when appropriate, but all touch-up requests are reviewed on a case-by-case basis and are subject to applicable fees. At a minimum, clients should expect to cover the cost of setup and supplies, with larger touch-ups billed at the shop minimum or the artist’s hourly rate depending on the amount of work required.
A few things to keep in mind:
Please allow 4–6 weeks for your tattoo to fully heal before requesting a review.
We will request photos of the tattoo, and a close-up of the areas in question.
We will require an in-person evaluation with the original artist and or Shop Manager.
We expect you to hold up your end of the Tattoo Process - healing. Even minor neglect can cause significant issues. Scabbing is not normal, and will heal poorly. - This is negligence.
All touch-up requests are reviewed individually and handled at the artist’s discretion.
Additional work due to excessive scabbing, picking, scratching, sun exposure, tanning, infection, poor aftercare, scar tissue, or difficult healing may require additional charges.
Hands, fingers, feet, face, lips, ears, elbows, knees, and other high-wear areas often require ongoing maintenance and are not guaranteed. Full price is required to re-work these “novelty” areas.
Design changes, additions, coverups, reworks, color changes, or expanding an existing tattoo are not considered touch-ups and are billed as new tattoo work.
Every tattoo, every client, and every healing experience is different. The best way to determine what, if anything, is needed is through an in-person evaluation with your artist or Shop Manager.
Artwork Creation
Over the past 20 years, we have come to the conclusion that many people have an unrealistic sense of what can be designed by your tattoo artist in a short amount of time.
The reality is drawings and designs often take 2x-5x as long as the tattoo itself. A lot goes into a finished custom design in order to prepare it for a tattoo. Even the smallest changes to some designs take over an hour to complete. The more complex the design and/or the changes, the longer it will take to complete those changes.
While we are gifted, talented artists, we are trying to create something for someone unique, YOU. And that is different than drawing something for ourselves out of our imaginations. You have your own unique wants, needs, and tastes that can’t easily be expressed in a single meeting. Therefore, we do need you to do the research to show us what images you like, which specific images convey what you want the tattoo to be, specifically what you want designed, etc... Have them available at your Drawing Appointment, and be prepared to put trust in the artist you have chosen.
We will do our best to create what you are wanting, but that is often easier said than done. Many people envision one of the Tattoo Television (TV) Programs where the clients walk in and something that has very deep meaning is drawn for them while they wait. While this can be done in some cases. you need to realize that was just Television. Most of those drawings have been given 100% attention for weeks or sometimes months prior to them walking in. That's not the real world. We have up to 20 drawings each at any given time, each begging for attention, each pulling us into a completely different mental state to design. In other words, it takes time.
As with any other business, our artists need to be compensated for their time, not just the final product but the hours put into researching each design, the dozens of rough sketches it takes to get placement perfect (so that it flows over a 3-dimensional body properly) and every other tiny detail that helps make-up a final design. That being said, we do charge for Drawing appointments, and additional Drawing time when necessary to accommodate your changes. The artwork produced is what the artist will use to create the tattoo on you, it is not for sale. You are paying the artist for their time to create your idea. - Speak to your artist about what may be required to create your artwork both the amount of time, and the hard cost to developing. your custom design. Generally a Drawing session is $150 and covers about 2 hours of dedicated drawing time. Additional time may be required if your project is extensive, complex, or the design keeps changing. - you are paying for the artists dedicated time to prepare your tattoo.
