Ancient Stories made in modern Ink – Jon Poulson
A Classically Trained Artist with a Passion for Tattooing
Jon’s journey began in Salt Lake City in the early 2000s, where tattooing was still considered taboo in Utah. Drawn to art from a young age, he developed his style through graffiti, fine art, and formal training before pursuing tattooing full time. Over the years, he has worked in some of the world’s top tattoo shops, refining his craft while building a reputation as an award-winning tattoo artist known for precision, depth, and cultural respect.
Ancient Marks – His Private Studio & Vision
Jon’s passion led him to create AncientMarks.org, his private art studio where every tattoo becomes a ceremonial act. It’s where he operates with full creative control, focusing on pieces that are meaningful, intentional, and connected to heritage. Jon believes in collaboration—working with each client to bring their ideas to life with both technical precision and symbolic integrity.
Featured Work & Recognition
Jon’s craft has been recognized internationally. He is featured in Northern Black’s The Nordic Tattoo Vol. 3, showcasing his mastery of Viking, Nordic, and BindRune designs. He’s also been published in multiple art books and participated in global art shows, contributing to the wider discussion on authenticity, symbolism, and the ethics of tattooing in Norse/Nordic styles.
His Story & Artistic Journey
Starting around the early 2000s, Jon pulled from multiple artistic backgrounds—fine art, commercial illustration, graffiti—and merged them with traditional tattoo styles. He’s traveled, drawn inspiration globally, and refined his ability to take complex designs (like knotwork, bindrunes, and geometric mandalas) and make them flow beautifully on the human body. His training is classically grounded, but his eye is always forward.
How Jon Works & What to Expect
He takes on select projects that are well-suited to his strengths and schedule. Big or symbolic work is his bread & butter—pieces that require time, intention, and precision.
He is not opposed to smaller pieces that align with his style and alow him to explore his creativity on a smaller scale, honing emerging styles to incorporate into his larger works.
The process begins with a detailed Tattoo Inquiry Form. Jon uses that to understand design vision, placement, symbolism, scale, and personal meaning. That way, session time can be used most effectively.
If Jon isn’t able to take on a project, he’ll help match you with one of his talented team members to help bring your vision to life. Great art, strong reputation, and ethical practice are non-negotiable.
Areas of Focus
Nordic, Celtic & Viking Tattoos – Knotwork, runes, bindrunes, mythological imagery
Sacred Geometry & Mandalas – Symmetry, balance, spiritual symbolism

Nature & Mountain Scenes – Black & grey or full color realism inspired by Utah landscapes
Large-Scale & Full Body Work – Sleeves, chest panels, and back pieces designed to flow with the body
Ornamental & Blackwork – Bold, timeless designs that emphasize balance and form
A Collaborative Process
Because Jon’s focus is on quality over quantity, he takes on select projects that align with his strengths and schedule. Every tattoo begins with an in-depth consultation to ensure that the design not only fits your vision but also respects the cultural or symbolic roots behind it. Clients who can’t work directly with Jon are often matched with one of Aloha’s resident artists—handpicked by Jon for their professionalism, talent, and dedication to the craft.

No tattoo is too small or too big; you name it, Jon has probably done it or something similar to it. Jon is always excited to try something new to expand his artistic experiences.
Jon is friendly and seriously despises that "holier-than-thou" and the "Better Than You or That Tattoo" or the “Criminal/Thug/Hustler mentality” attitude that is prolific at many shops in town. You won't find that attitude here; Jon is caring and compassionate with regard to each client's individual needs and expectations while being the guide that ensures the best possible tattoo for each client -- and it shows.
Jon is available most days and would love to work with you on your next tattoo. Jon is generally the most in-demand artist at Aloha Tattoos in Salt Lake City. As long as there is an open spot in his schedule and he feels the tattoo the two of you are creating for you is a good fit, he is available for your tattoo.
If it’s not a great fit, Jon is happy to get you with the right artist for your particular tattoo.
